35th annual Student Concerto Competition

On Sunday, May 6th  at 4:00 p.m. at Kenan Auditorium, the Wilmington Symphony's annual Free Family Concert spotlights young performers and musicians. Bring the kids and grandkids and introduce them to the joy and excitement of an orchestra concert as Steven Errante conducts the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra in this exhilarating performance.

The Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Wilmington School of Ballet are joining forces for a delightfully choreographed performance of Bizet's famous L'Arlesienne Suites. Featured segments include Minuetto, Carillon, Pastorale, Intermezzo, Menuet, and Farandole.

The matinee concert will also feature Alexei Mejouev, Junior Division Winner the Wilmington Symphony's 35th annual Student Concerto Competition, accompanied by the Youth Orchestra in the first movement of Haydn's Violin Concerto in G.

Sunday's matinee is free, however seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Free tickets will be available at the door beginning one hour before the performance.

Opening the program is the Wilmington Symphony Junior Strings directed by Jane Tierney.  They begin with "Scheherazade" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and arranged by Carrie Lane Gruselle including its highlights from "The Sea and Sinbad's Ship," "The Story of the Kalendar Prince," "The Young Prince and the Young Princess" and "Festival at Baghdad."  The Junior Strings will also perform "Wonderland Variations" by Richard Meyer.

With its focus on young performers, the annual Free Family Concert is another highlight of the Wilmington Symphony's commitment to youth outreach. The program is designed to delight audience members as it develops a new generation of music-lovers through exposure to orchestral music at a young age. The free concert spotlights the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings as a means of creating personal connections with peer group of performers on stage for young children in the audience.

Conductor Steven Errante is especially adept at addressing this young and diverse audience. His comments make the concert a casual and inviting event for all age groups and interest levels, a program promising both delightful music and a wonderful opportunity for afternoon family time.

The Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings are educational and outreach programs of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra. Youth Orchestra musicians are ninth- through twelfth-grade strings, winds, brass and percussion students, and Junior Strings are sixth- through eighth-grade string students who perform several concerts during the course of their current 2011- 2012 concert season.

The mission of the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings is to enrich the lives of Cape Fear area youth by providing talented young musicians with unique orchestral training and performing opportunities. New-member auditions will be held in late-August and early September for the fall semester.

The Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra's 2011-2012 concert season and other youth education programs of the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra are presented with grateful appreciation for support from the Corning Incorporated Foundation, the Landfall Foundation, and the Grassroots Arts Program of the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency.
