Amahl and the Night VisitorsThe Wilmington Symphony Orchestra presents a fully staged production of the holiday classic Amahl and the Night Visitors, featuring the UNCW Opera Outreach Program.

Program Notes HERE.

Amahl and the Night Visitors is an opera in one act by Gian Carlo Menotti, and was the first opera specifically composed for television in America. The first performance was on December 24, 1951 in New York City at Rockefeller Center by the NBC Opera Theatre. It was broadcast live on television as the debut production of the Hallmark Hall of Fame. An estimated five million people saw the live broadcast, the largest audience ever to see a televised opera

The UNCW Opera Outreach Project, directed by Nancy King, is designed to provide vocal and dramatic operatic training to young singers at UNCW and in the community. UNC-WOOP! is committed to fostering the link between campus and community and to awakening the interest in opera locally.

Conductor, Steven Errante says of this work, "Amahl and the Night Visitors is a little gem of an opera, with beautiful melodies, colorful orchestration, both humanity and a sense of humor -- all in the telling of a heart-warming story."

The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra has established a unique artistic profile and civic stature in southeastern North Carolina, with 42-year tradition of programming great music, showcasing the talents of our area's musicians, and extending a host of vibrant educational programs for all ages.
