Berlioz, Corsairs Overture
Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty
Richard Strauss, Four Last Songs
Opening Night begins with buckles all awash and jubilant brass from the brilliant Corsairs Overture of Hector Berlioz based on his favorite pirate romance novel. Transporting the audience to the fairytale world of the Brothers Grimm is a sumptuous selection of music from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet — one of the most famous scores in the classical repertoire. Nancy King highlights the sublime elegance of Richard Strauss's autumnal Four Last Songs with their remarkable soaring melodies arching over the full orchestra.
